For anyone visiting my blog from the future, or new to reading me right now, here are a few of my favorite articles from last year!
In no particular order.
05. Investigative Reasoning
This article introduces Reason, the oft hallowed form of thinking in what I consider its most fundamental and technically precise concept: as The Art of Comparing Thoughts.
A Novices Guide to Unix for Smart People
In this article I present computer technology. How to think about it and how to use it in a distilled way. Specifically the Unix command line, and more importantly a mental model of how all computers actually work, useful for a 5 year old.
From the Archives: Our Evil Economy
This is a rather extensive piece I wrote several years ago detailing my thoughts on how our economic and regulatory systems go wrong. Its not perfect, but I really like some parts of it still.
01. The War to Save Science
This was the first published article, but also one I put major effort into getting right. Science is broken as a social and technical system in relationship to the public, and we need to fix it.
From the Archives: Through the Eyes of an Animist Philosopher
This one is honestly just artistic and beautiful as a piece of writing and thinking. I really adore it. One of the ongoing delays with getting more writing out is I want to write more articles with the depth of style, character, and prose I am capable of at my best. Marrying this to technical substance is harder than either art or science as masters of their own domain.
Please drop in the comments what you think of my Substack so far!
I’d be really glad of the feedback, I don’t want to exist only in the feedback of my own mind or the messages that personal friends send me about what catches their eye.
Cheers to 2022!
Here’s to hoping the next year takes the best of it and starts running with it!
